Teddy Sheringham believes Raheem Sterling's situation at Chelsea may be "a blessing in disguise" for the player.
Sterling has found himself frozen out of the team to start the season, leading to widespread speculation that he'll depart Stamford Bridge before the transfer window closes later this week.
The 29-year-old's public spat with the West London club is the latest bit of turmoil for a side that has had a fair share of it in recent years, with a revolving door of managers and several dozen players signed to a bloated squad in dire need of trimming.
Sheringham says the state of club is good impetus for Sterling to move on, even if it isn't his choice.
"He showed his best form under Pep Guardiola [at Manchester City]," Sheringham said of Sterling when speaking to Prime Casino. "I think playing for a manager in such a steady and structured environment has been a big loss for him since he moved to Chelsea.
"Nobody knows what is going to happen at Chelsea from one day to the next, it’s a circus over there. You can’t believe what goes on at that club. The turnover of players and managers at that club is ridiculous. It’s not an environment that helps players deliver their best performances.
"Perhaps leaving would be a blessing in disguise for him. Perhaps playing in a settled environment with good structure is what he needs next."
As for what club could offer such an environment for the 82 times capped England international, Sheringham said Sterling may not have to move very far.
"There’s talks that Crystal Palace would like to take him, and I suspect that he’ll have a few offers before the transfer window shuts," Sheringham said. "Palace aren’t the biggest club in the league, but they’ve made steady improvement under Oliver Glasner and everything is relatively settled there.
"It feels like he needs a change of environment and the opportunity to play - I think Palace could offer him that."
