UEFA Champions League 2024-25: New draw and tournament format explainedDAZN
The all-new look for Europe's biggest competition.

The Champions League will return next month, and the draw for the first round will take place on Thursday in Monaco.

However, Europe's premier club competition will undergo a new format for the 2024-25 season, with the group stage being replaced with a new 36-team league table for the opening exchanges in the tournament.

How will the new Champions League format work?

After Wednesday night's final qualifying phase, 36 teams head to Monaco for the draw for the first-ever League Phase of the Champions League.

The teams will be divided into four pots of nine teams each based on their UEFA club coefficient, with the current holders (Real Madrid) placed as the top seed in pot 1.

Each team will be drawn to face two opponents from each of the four pots, one at home and one away. Teams cannot face opponents from their own country, and can only be drawn against at most, two sides from the same country.

Who qualifies from the League phase?

At the end of the League Phase, the top eight sides in the table will qualify automatically to the knockout stage. Teams ranked from 9th to 24th will contest a knockout play-off round, with the teams ranked from 9th to 16th the seeded team. The winners of those games will progress to the last 16.

Sides finishing 25th to 36th will be eliminated from the European competition altogether.
