Soccer is a global game and with what are a relatively simple set of rules, it's a sport which can be played in a variety of settings.

What is the objective of a soccer match?
The aim of the game is to score more goals than the opposition team within 90 minutes.
A typical soccer match is split into two 45 minute halves with a 15 minute break in between each period which is known as halftime.
A game can often be extended past the 90 minute period if the referee feels the need to add any injury time.
How many players are needed for a soccer match?
A traditional soccer match sees two teams made up of 11 players go head-to-head.
There are also up to seven substitutes if the manager needs to make any tactical changes or if a player picks up an injury.
How does a team score a goal?
A player can score by putting the ball in the opponent's goal.
The ball needs to be fully over the goal line in order for it to count and a ball can be placed in the goal by any part of a player's body besides the hand or arm up to the shoulder.
How does a team win a game of soccer?
A team is declared the winner if they score more goals than their opponents within 90 minutes.
If the scores are level after 90 minutes, the game is drawn unless it's a cup game where extra time and even a penalty shootout are used to determine a winner.
What is a foul and can players be sent off?
Players can be penalised for fouls during a soccer match.
Depending on the severity of a foul, the referee can show a yellow or red card to the offending player.
A yellow card serves as a warning, while a red card will see a player dismissed from the match.
If a player is shown two yellow cards during a game, they will also be sent off as two yellow cards are equivalent to one red card.
What does the term 'offside' mean during a soccer match?
An offside can be called if an attacking player is in front of the last defender when a pass is played to them.
The offside rule was created to discourage players from being near the opposition's goal while waiting for the all-important pass.
In order for a player to be onside they must be placed in front of the last defender when the ball is played, if not, an offside will be called and the defending team are awarded a free kick.
Players cannot be caught offside in their own half.
