Former Chelsea and Arsenal defender William Gallas believes Mauricio Pochettino needs to qualify for the Europa League to save his job for next season.
Chelsea are in ninth place after a poor season so far, but they are only six points behind sixth-placed Newcastle after some inconsistent performances from clubs chasing the Europa League spots.
Manager Pochettino has struggled to convince at Stamford Bridge, and speaking to Lord Ping, Gallas thinks that he needs Europa League football to stay in charge.
He said: “Pochettino has failed in his first season as Chelsea manager. There is no other conclusion that can be drawn.
“At the moment, he hasn’t won any trophies, and it is almost impossible for the club to qualify for European football. He hasn’t brought any trophies, Chelsea are ninth in the table, OK, Europe isn’t over yet, but it will be nearly impossible.
“At the end of the season, if he hasn’t taken the club into the Europa League, then he has failed. It is as simple as that.”
