Emmanuel Petit has slammed Gareth Southgate and labelled the England manager's rein as a failure.

Southgate takes charge of his 100th game as boss of the national team this weekend when England meet Switzerland in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024.

It's the fourth consecutive appearance in the last eight under the 53-year-old for the Three Lions, but the World Cup-winning midfielder told talkSPORT that he thinks Southgate should have done better as England boss.

He said: "He reminds me, sometimes, of Didier Deschamps with the quality that he has and on the bench as well. A huge group of quality players.

"We are so frustrated because he cannot reach the pinnacle with them and to make them play beautiful football, romantic football.

"So, yes, it is frustrating to watch, it must be frustrating as well to play as a player and he hasn't won any medals with England.

"He has been manager for the last eight years, he did reach the semi-final [of the 2018 World Cup]. He did some good runs in competitions.

"But, for me, he has failed. Simple as that. Having been the manager for so long, with the quality of English football, he should have won at least one medal."
