What is a four-way match? Different match types and how they workDAZN

Wrestling matches with multiple combatants competing simultaneously are among some of the most popular in the sport, and as such it's fairly standard to see three, four or even five contestants in a single bout.

Among the fan favourites are four-way matches. Depending on the promotion, they've been given names such as "Fatal Four-Way," "Four Corners match," "Tornado Tag Team match" and "Four-Way Dance."

Names aside, there are some subtle differences between these matches. DAZN explains in more detail below:

Four-way non-elimination match

This is the four-way match seen most often in pro wrestling. All four contestants enter the ring at the same time and a single pinfall or submission on any of the competitiors wins it.

Four-way elimination match

All four contestants start in the ring simultaneously, but each needs to be eliminated by pinfall or submission until one winner is left standing.

This match variation is also often used with tag teams, with one member from two teams in the ring while everyone else stands on the apron waiting to be tagged (willingly or not) into action.

Tornado Tag Team match

A tag team match in name only, this chaotic variation sees all four wrestlers from both teams in the ring at the same time. Standard pinfall and submission rules apply, so the first fall wins.

Four-way boxing match

An innovative event with elements borrowed from pro wrestling and adapted to a boxing environment, MF & DAZN: X Series 008 will be the first of its kind.

NichLMAO, Swarmz, B Dave and Ryan Johnston compete in this thrilling and brand-new survivor tag format where it is every man for himself over the course of four barnstorming rounds. For more information on exactly how it all works, click here.
