Chelsea head into Thursday's match against Manchester City firmly in the midtable.
The Blues are 10th in the Premier League, a full 10 points behind fourth-place Manchester United and nowhere near where they would have expected to be at this point in the season. Chelsea started 2023 with a draw (1-1 at Nottingham Forest) and are now looking to grab their first win of the new year.
Of course, the opposition will play a big part in whether the Blues can walk away with three points for the first time in 2023, and City have been a thorn in the Londoners' side in recent years — especially at Stamford Bridge, where City have won back-to-back league matches (as part of winning seven of the teams' last 10 Premier League meetings).
It's an issue not lost on Chelsea head coach Graham Potter, who believes his side will need to be at the top of their game to best their visitors on Thursday.
"We have to play well ourselves, that’s the key," Potter said. "You have to understand the quality that they have and try to stop it, which sounds simple when I articulate it now but obviously in reality it’s not so straightforward."
"They’re a top team but we can cause them a problem. We can be ourselves, try to play well and put them under pressure. We need to use Stamford Bridge and then see what happens."
