The UEFA Europa League final is here, and no one could have predicted the teams participating in the final.
Eintracht Frankfurt and Rangers each traveled arduous roads to get to Seville, with significant victories against more fancied sides along the way. Now, they get to contest a major European final for the first time in years — it's been over four decades since Eintracht played in, and won, the UEFA Cup final, while Rangers were runners-up in 2008.
While the Scottish side has reached this stage far more recently, they have to return to the early 1970s for their last continental championship. As such, they are not simply looking to be tourists on Wednesday.
“We respect Eintracht Frankfurt. They have had an amazing run in Europe as well, so it is going to be an exciting final," said Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst. "A final is always nice when you win, but if you lose, you don’t like it, so we are here to win it."
The match will be the third meeting between the teams, although their previous two games against one another came way back in 1960 in the two-legged European Cup semi-final. Needless to say, there is little in the way of rivalry between the two sides, but both will be teeming with motivation in the biggest match of their respective campaigns.
