Mauricio Pochettino's seat got a little bit hotter this weekend as Chelsea were defeated 1-0 in the Carabao Cup final by Liverpool.

The match represented one of the last opportunities for the beleaguered London club to claim some hardware this season, as they are well off the pace in the Premier League and are not involved in European football.

While the Blues could make a run to the FA Cup final, their results under Pochettino in his first season at Stamford Bridge have been well below expectations, especially given the expenditure the club have made on players.

As such, Pochettino's job security is a hot topic, and former Chelsea defender William Gallas believes that — should the Blues decide to move on from Pochettino — the club could reunite with a manager who he worked under in the early 2000s.

Speaking to <a href="https://www.gentingcasino.com/insights/pr/football-insights-william-gallas-1/"> Genting Casino </a> , Gallas explained how two-time Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho could succeed in a potential third tenure in charge at the club. 

“With Jose, you have to give him the right players, it’s that simple," Gallas said. 

"You have to give him warriors and the right players who want to fight and who want to make sacrifices and aren’t scared to suffer. If Chelsea gave him these types of players, he would be a great choice.

"I don’t know the players so well but I think some of the players aren’t strong enough to work with Mourinho. You have to be strong not just for a few games but for the whole season. With Mourinho, you also have to fight for your place in training and I think some of Chelsea’s players are too soft.”

William Gallas thinks former Chelsea manager 'would be a great choice' to replace Mauricio Pochettino

The fallout from Chelsea's 1-0 loss to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final is still being felt, with manager Mauricio Pochettino on the hot seat.

Pochettino's Blues have just one more realistic chance at a trophy this season, with the London club still active in the FA Cup later this week. A loss to EFL Championship side Leeds United in Wednesday's fifth round match would be disastrous for Pochettino and Chelsea, who are in 11th place in the Premier League and likely to miss out on European football again next season.

With pressure mounting, a former Chelsea defender says Pochettino must get the club to perform or risk being sacked.

Speaking to <a href="https://www.gentingcasino.com/insights/pr/football-insights-william-gallas-1/">Genting Casino</a>, William Gallas explained that the manager is the first one to go in these situations, and Pochettino is no different despite this being his first season in charge.

“You have to blame someone," Gallas said. 

"When you aren’t getting results it always goes to the manager. It’s always the manager who is to blame and this is the risk of being a manager. If the club isn't performing then they have to sack Pochettino. Some people have the credit to speak about the manager. 
 
“Pochettino won trophies with PSG but in England, he hasn’t won anything. He was tasked with putting Chelsea back on track but he hasn’t done it. We don’t know if there’s something wrong with the connection between the manager and the players.”

Former Chelsea player says Mauricio Pochettino needs to get results or be sacked

Marcus Rashford's struggles this season have the Manchester United forward linked with a move away from Old Trafford this summer, with Paris Saint-Germain one of the clubs reportedly interested in the 26-year-old's services.

Rashford set a career high for goals last season with 30 across all competitions, but a prolonged goal drought has seen him score just five times during the current campaign.

The lack of production has led many to believe that Rashford will be shown the exit door following the end of the campaign, especially with new minority owner Jim Ratcliffe set to make a major overhaul of the club in the summer.

Whether Rashford remains a Red Devil or he moves on is yet to be decided, but a former Man United player has expressed doubts as to whether a move to the French capital could serve as a reset for the England international.

Speaking to <a href="https://insights.betfred.com/newsroom/andy-cole-manchester-united-need-to-believe-they-can-get-a-result-at-manchester-city-this-weekend/">Betfred</a>, Andy Cole explained that the answer to Rashford's woes will likely come from both the player and the club.

“I don’t know," Cole said in regards to whether Rashford could thrive at PSG. 

"The only person you can get an honest answer from is Marcus. His form last season was exceptional and his form this season has been the complete opposite of that. I don’t know why because I don’t know what’s going on in his personal life, whether he’s enjoying his football or not or whether he still enjoys playing for Manchester United.

“What my mindset would be is not the same as what his would be, so I don’t like speculating about a player’s mindset. Whatever he or Manchester United decide to do this summer will be decided by both parties.”

According to football journalist Ekrem Konur, Miami are among a handful of teams set to compete for Modric's signature this summer. The Croatian is out of contract at the end of the season and could choose to re-sign with Real Madrid, but if he doesn't Konour says there are suitors in MLS and Saudi Arabia keen to land the 38-year-old.

Notably, all three players are important on the defensive side of the ball for manager Carlo Ancelotti, yet Real Madrid haven't missed a beat when it comes to keeping the ball out of their own net.

Ancelotti's men have allowed a league-best 16 goals through 26 matches, which is half of second-place Girona's tally and 10 goals fewer than the next best defensive sides (four teams).

It's been so hard to score against Real Madrid that they have actually set a club record for fewest goals allowed at this point in a campaign.

Russell Wilson's future as a member of the Denver Broncos is unclear, and on Tuesday head coach Sean Payton stoked the proverbial fires as rumours of unrest between player and coach persist.

Wilson has repeatedly stated his desire to continue his career in Denver, <a href="https://www.dazn.com/en-GB/news/american-football/russell-wilson-clarifies-denver-broncos-future/n000uif8iv3c1t0wbgmbfxan3">reiterating his stance this week</a> on a podcast with former NFL player Brandon Marshall.

However, Payton met with members of the media at the NFL Scouting Combine on Tuesday and did little to dispel reports of Wilson's impending departure from the Broncos, referencing a social media post as he addressed his team's QB situation.

According to the <a href="https://twitter.com/MikeGarafolo/status/1762508407804670021">NFL Network's Mike Garafolo</a>, Payton referred to a meme he saw recently "with a guy wearing a jersey and a bunch of QB names crossed off."

“Our job is to make sure this next one doesn’t have a line through it,” Payton said.

The choice wording by Payton prompted a follow-up by the Broncos coach, who added that the team will make a decision on Wilson's future within the next two weeks.

Sean Payton gives ominous response to meme about Russell Wilson's future with Denver Broncos

Highly-rated North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye is set to follow fellow prospects Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels in declining to participate in on-field drills during the NFL Scouting Combine. 

The week-long event is currently taking place in Indianapolis with quarterbacks scheduled to be put through their paces at Lucas Oil Field on Saturday.

Maye, however, looks to be following on from a recent trend in which the most highly-rated quarterback prospects have passed on performing at the combine and instead working out for scouts at their college pro days. These can offer a more familiar environment that can protect an NFL prospect's draft stock. 

According to <a href="https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/2024-nfl-combine-drake-maye-planning-to-do-just-physicals-and-interviews-at-combine-will-not-throw/">CBS Sports</a>, Maye is only looking to take part in ‘just physicals and interviews’ this week. Williams and Daniels are also skipping the on-field drills, with many people tipping the trio to be selected in the first three picks during April’s NFL Draft. 

Maye has also been quizzed about potential destinations, with the New England Patriots, Chicago Bears and Washington Commanders three of his mooted landing spots.

"I know that Boston is -- shoot, these three great sports towns you're talking about now,” he told <a href="https://open.spotify.com/episode/1QAQ0MmBI9ZYgJoboBeThL">The Adam Schefter Podcast.</a>

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles was present at the NFL Scouting Combine this week at the start of what is likely to be a very busy offseason for him and his staff. 

The Bucs have several key decisions to make in terms of contracts and free agency, with a number of key players currently set to hit the open market. In preparation for the upcoming wheeling and dealing, <a href="https://www.dazn.com/en-GB/news/american-football/two-time-super-bowl-winner-cut-as-tampa-bay-buccaneers-get-set-for-free-agency-push/1jgc7uwk210vk12axb0xsjeob7">the club have released star linebacker Shaquil Barrett</a> in order to free up cap space. 

Baker Mayfield, Mike Evans and Antonine Winfield are among the key Bucs players on the cusp of free agency, with Bowles admitting that the team are intent on securing a new deal for quarterback Mayfield.

“It's an extremely high priority, obviously," Bowles told the <a href="https://www.nfl.com/news/buccaneers-head-coach-todd-bowles-re-signing-baker-mayfield-extremely-high-priority">NFL’s Good Morning Football </a>on Tuesday.

"You know, we got a couple days before the league year begins, but we love Baker. Baker had a heck of a year. He fit right in with us all the way around. 

“The chemistry was outstanding with him and all the receivers and the offense as a whole, so you want to hope to build on that. I understand the business side of it. Like I said, we like Bake and we hope things get worked out."

Mayfield enjoyed career highs of 4,044 passing yards and 28 touchdowns with the Buccaneers in 2023 as he bounced back from a 2022 campaign that saw him turn out for both the Carolina Panthers and LA Rams.

The 28-year-old was the number one draft pick in 2018 and spent four years with the Cleveland Browns where he struggled for consistency.

Age, ability, supply and demand will all factor into how big a deal each player will be able to command, with each franchise approaching free agency in a different way. 

For some teams, continuity is the name of the game as they look to avoid losing key contributors, while others will enter the free agency period with plenty of salary cap room and the intent to spend it. 

Here is a look at five of the teams primed to be the most active when the free agency fun and games get underway. 

<h2>Washington Commanders</h2>

When you combine a league-leading $96million in cap space, a new head coach, a new ownership group and the second overall draft pick, it promises to be an eventful offseason in the nation’s capital. 

A new quarterback is top of the shopping list, but that will likely come in the draft, so expect the Commanders to prioritise edge rushers in free agency, while also looking at the offensive line, wide receiver and linebacker positions. 

<h2>New England Patriots</h2>

Another team with a new head coach and another side that could address their need for a new quarterback at the top of the draft.

With $88 million in cap space, they have the chance to restock their receiving corps and should also be able to add a veteran running back, with a host of experienced options set to hit the market. Offense will definitely be the priority for the Pats as they look to revitalise a unit that has been withering away since the exit of Tom Brady. 

<h2>Chicago Bears</h2>

Not only do the Bears have a decision to make surrounding their first overall draft pick, but they also have $82 million in cap space to play with this offseason. 

Whether or not they decide to pull the trigger on Caleb Williams and trade away Justin Fields, offensive line help is needed, as is the addition of targets for whoever is behind centre to throw to. There should be plenty for Bears fans to get excited about over the next couple of months. 

<h2>Houston Texans</h2>

A stellar 2023 draft class which saw a franchise quarterback selected in C.J. Stroud, plus Defensive Rookie of the Year in Will Anderson helped propel the Texans into the playoffs sooner than all-but the most optimistic fan could have expected.

With a healthy $73 million in cap space, the Texans can now look to improve their running game and stock up on both sides of the line as they look to kick on from a very promising start to life under DeMeco Ryans. 

<h2>Tennessee Titans</h2>

The Titans are in full-on rebuild mode, with Brian Callahan replacing Mike Vrabel as head coach, while Ryan Tannehill and Derrick Henry - the two faces of the franchise in recent years - will be free agents next month. 

Callahan inherits a roster full of gaps, with the offense needing help at tackle and all of the skill positions as they look to support Will Levis’ development. Even with the seventh overall draft pick and the third-most cap space ($85 million), smart decisions will have to be made this offseason.

WBO light middleweight champion Tim Tszyu is confident that he can beat some of boxing's best operators if particular fights were to materialise. 

After beating Brian Mendoza to claim his first world title in October, Tszyu now takes on former world champion Keith Thurman in Las Vegas on March 30 in what could be a breakout fight for the Australian.

Tszyu is already making a name for himself in the sport, but a win over a notable US name will put him in a position to push for major contests, including a meeting with unified welterweight champion Terence Crawford. 

A fight with Crawford is one which Tszyu has previously expressed an interest in and during an appearance on <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u93DAwy-hYM">The DAZN Boxing Show</a>, the 29-year-old was asked to first give a prediction for a potential fight with Canelo Alvarez.

Eddie Hearn has hit out at Gervonta Davis after the Baltimore man went public with the offer he received from the Matchroom boss regarding a potential Conor Benn fight.  

Hearn is eager to put his welterweight charge in the ring with ‘Tank’ and was hopeful that a bout between the pair could be agreed. 

Benn had his first outing of 2024 earlier this month when he outpointed Peter Dobson in Las Vegas.  

In the immediate aftermath, Benn’s name was linked to a number of high-profile fights including Davis and Chris Eubank Jr, and Hearn has provided the latest update on where things stand with Davis. 

“I don’t know why I waste my time with this guy, [he’s] like a baby,” said Hearn when speaking to <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zzU0bENlYw">Boxing Social</a>.  

“If you’re not willing to sit down and have a sensible business discussion, like, he doesn’t even know the details of the offer. 

“We made him an eight-figure offer with plenty of upside. He doesn’t even want to discuss the upside because he just gets ill advice. But, anyway, I wish him all the best. Great fighter and good luck against Frank Martin.”

Ricky Burns could be about to return to the ring following a spell of inactivity where many considered the Scotsman retired.

Burns shot to fame in 2010 when he became world champion at super-featherweight with a big upset win over Roman Martinez.  

Following that victory, Burns would go on a superb run that would see him score decisive wins over quality fighters such as Michael Katsidis and Kevin Mitchell. 

Burns would eventually suffer a downturn in form and would endure losses against the likes of Terence Crawford, Anthony Crolla, and Lee Selby, but he continues to push on with his career.  

Last year, Burns defeated Willie Limond following a near two-year layoff, but can he turn the clock back against the much younger McKenna if the reported fight comes off.

Legendary British boxer set for ring return and it's not Amir Khan or Kell Brook

Oscar De La Hoya has appeared to tease a return to the ring, but the person standing in the opposite corner will come as a surprise. 

De La Hoya is currently in the midst of a promotional tour for the fight between Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia which is set to take place on April 20, and made an appearance on <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9qcLQ3ktyc">Ariel Helwani's MMA Hour</a> to discuss Garcia's career so far. 

One topic of discussion was a possible fight between Garcia and UFC bantamweight champion Sean O'Malley after the former expressed an interest in facing the MMA star. 

De La Hoya was open to the idea and even mentioned a possible fight for himself in the co-main against UFC president Dana White. 

"I would entertain because Ryan can fight in the main event with this kid and maybe I could do Dana on the co-main," De La Hoya said. 

"I’m good, but it doesn’t mean we can’t go at it."

The upcoming fight on April 20 against Garcia will be Haney's first defence of his WBC super lightweight title after beating Regis Prograis last year.

Oscar De La Hoya teases surprise name for comeback fight

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a big offseason ahead of them and have begun the work of freeing up salary cap room by releasing linebacker Shaquil Barrett. 

The two-time Pro Bowler had a $14.1million salary cap number this year and his release comes as the franchise begin the offseason with quarterback Baker Mayfield, wide receiver Mike Evans and safety Antoine Winfield all set for free agency. 

Barrett has been a key part of the Tampa Bay defense in the five seasons since he joined from Denver, winning a second Super Bowl ring in 2020 following his first victory in 2015 with the Broncos. He led the league in sacks with 19.5 in 2019, but registered just 4.5 in his 16 matches last term. 

Bucs head coach Todd Bowles discussed the decision to release Barrett on the <a href="https://www.nfl.com/news/buccaneers-releasing-two-time-pro-bowl-olb-shaq-barrett">NFL’s Good Morning Football</a>. 

"It's never a seamless move," admitted Bowles.

“It's always, you know, from a personal side, you get very close to these guys as well as they do the coaches, and you have a relationship that never goes away. 

“From a business side, in order for us to get better and bring in new talent and upgrade the team, we have to get some of these things done, and they're hard decisions, but Shaq has been great for us over the past five years. He came in, he made a heck of a name for himself. He's one of the best human beings you could ever meet, and he's still got some great playing abilities left in him."

Promoter Eddie Hearn believes Francis Ngannou poses a huge challenge for Anthony Joshua when they meet on March 8 in Saudi Arabia. 

After making easy work of Otto Wallin in December, Joshua will now face the former UFC heavyweight champion in an intriguing contest. 

Joshua cannot afford any slip-ups against an opponent who will be featuring in just his second professional boxing bout after losing to Tyson Fury last October. 

While Ngannou may have been beaten by the WBC world heavyweight champion, he did manage to knock down Fury in the third round and emerged from the contest with plenty of plaudits. 

Looking ahead to the fight on <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YoIjoUclj44">Ariel Helwani's MMA Hour</a>, Hearn explained why Ngannou is a threat to Joshua. 

"This is the first time AJ has fought an opponent that outsizes him," Hearn said. 

"This guy is huge, you have been around him plenty of times, when I turned to him at the press conference and started talking to him, and then I turned to AJ, it was like a cruiserweight and a heavyweight.

"So, this is a real threat. When those two come together, press conference, weigh-in, and in the ring in Riyadh, this is Godzilla and King Kong.

"Anything can happen in this fight; you land one shot on the chin and it’s over.

"I’m very confident that AJ is going to knock him out."

With the start of the new NFL year coming on March 13, NFL teams have two weeks to ensure that they are under the 2024 salary cap. 

It was confirmed last week that the cap would increase to a record $255.4million, significantly higher than many forecast, but that will not stop a number of teams from having to shave money from their payroll, which will see some big names cut. 

The New York Jets look to be one of the first teams to make a significant cut as <a href="https://www.espn.co.uk/nfl/story/_/id/39606271/new-york-jets-releasing-left-guard-laken-tomlinson">ESPN</a> report that left guard Laken Tomlinson is set to be released. 

The 32-year-old was signed to a three-year, $40million contract in 2022, but the former Lions and 49ers man has struggled for consistency in New York. His salary was due to count $18.9million against this year’s cap, with his release saving just over $8million, leading to a hit of more than $10million on this year’s cap. 

Tomlinson looks to be the first victim of what is likely to be a significant overhaul on the Jets line, following a season in which it ranked as one of the league’s worst units. Mekhi Becton, Duane Brown and Connor McGovern are all set for free agency.

After seeing Aaron Rodgers rupture his Achilles tendon on just the fourth snap of the season, pass protection remained an issue for the Jets who finished the season with a 7-10 record to finish third in the AFC East. 

Tomlinson’s experience and durability should ensure that he finds himself a new team ahead of the 2024 campaign.

New York Jets set to release $40m star in salary-cap cut

One of the busiest days of the NFL’s offseason calendar is just around the corner, with free agency set to get underway in two weeks. 

The opening of the market will allow teams to restock their rosters and put together the pieces of what they hope will be a side that contends for Super Bowl honours next year. 

Quarterbacks are always in demand in the NFL, so what does this year’s upcoming crop of free agents look like? Here is a rundown of the top ten quarterback free agents. 

<h2>1. Kirk Cousins</h2>

The clear number one in this year’s batch of QBs set to hit the market and the former Washington and Minnesota signal-caller should have plenty of suitors.

However, he is still on the comeback trail after tearing his Achilles last season and at 36 years of age, he’s not one for the future. 

<h2>2. Jacoby Brissett</h2>

Over eight seasons in the NFL, Brissett has largely been restricted to the role of a more-than-capable back-up. He is certainly better than several NFL starters last season and would be a useful addition to most QB rooms. 

<h2>3. Baker Mayfield</h2>

It’ll be interesting to see how the league reacts to Mayfield’s bounce-back season last year as the former number-one overall draft pick put in perhaps his most solid campaign so far. 

<h2>4. Ryan Tannehill</h2>

While the first three players on this list could feasibly entertain being handed a starting job, we’re now into the section of this exercise consisting of players who will be looking at back-up roles. Tannehill will turn 36 this summer and after losing the starting job in Tennessee last season, is starting to look his age. 

<h2>5. Gardner Minshew</h2>

An entertaining player who managed to rack up 37 starts for three teams across five seasons without ever being handed the keys to an offense. 

<h2>6. Jameis Winston</h2>

Another former number-one draft pick, Winston hasn’t been a regular starter since 2019, when he set an NFL first by throwing for more than 30 touchdowns and 30 interceptions. He has enough experience to take on a back-up role somewhere. 

<h2>7. Sam Darnold</h2>

Amid promising reports coming out of 49ers training camp, there were brief calls for Darnold to usurp Brock Purdy in the San Francisco offense before Purdy was able to silence the doubters. A year under Kyle Shanahan is good for anyone’s CV. 

<h2>8. Tyrod Taylor</h2>

Another ageing QB, but the 13-year veteran Taylor is coming off the back of a decent season subbing in for Daniel Jones in New York and is a prime candidate for another back-up role in 2024. 

<h2>9. Drew Lock</h2>

Lock’s stock will be boosted by his Week 15 92-yard game-winning drive against the Eagle and has enough experience in the league to make himself useful somewhere. 

<h2>10. Joe Flacco</h2>

The unlikely resurgence of Joe Flacco during the home stretch last season and subsequent run to the playoffs with Cleveland was one of the more eyebrow-raising storylines in 2023, so who would bet against Flacco being another mid-season pick-up when injury strikes somewhere next season?

The top ten free agent NFL quarterbacks this offseason

Free agency begins in two weeks as NFL teams get set to offer big-money contracts and look to restock their rosters as preparations for the 2024 season step up. 

Wednesday, March 13 is the official start of free agency as the new NFL year begins, with the so-called ‘legal tampering’ period starting on Monday, March 11. With the salary cap having risen to a record $255.4million, expect plenty of big-money deals to be handed out. 

But while certain position groups will look for record-setting contracts, free agent running backs are again likely to face a battle to sign the kind of deals they feel they deserve. 

According to Adam Schefter of <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/39604881/sources-franchise-tags-unlikely-josh-jacobs-saquon-barkley">ESPN</a>, no teams are likely to use the franchise tag on a running back, meaning that the likes of Derrick Henry, Saquon Barkley, Josh Jacobs, Austin Ekeler and Tony Pollard are all set for free agency. 

Throw in the likes of D’Andre Swift, AJ Dillon, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Gus Edwards and Ezekiel Elliott who were all previously set for free agency and the 32 NFL teams are set to have a bumper market to choose from next month.

Supply is therefore likely to outstrip demand for veteran running backs, with logic suggesting that this will keep prices down, benefitting the teams, rather than the players. 

It also follows a recent trend in the NFL, whereby teams have looked to replace older running backs with cheaper, younger players without seeing a significant drop in production.

NFL franchise tag decisions set to pave way for bumper running back free agent crop

Eilish Tierney made a winning start to her professional career when she won on her debut this past weekend.  

A close friend of Fabio Wardley, Tierney only turned to boxing to lose weight, but now she has her sights set on the biggest prizes available within the sport after getting past Sheree Barnes. 

Despite her inexperience, Tierney has prepared properly and has had the pleasure of sparring with Ebanie Bridges and Nina Hughes before her maiden bout.  

The 25-year-old super-featherweight often jokes with Wardley that she’ll become world champion before him, but she’s very serious on reaching the top of the sport. 

"I 100% know I'll be world champion in a few years, and I know this is what I will do until I can't do it anymore," said Tierney when speaking to <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/68409261">BBC Sport</a>. 

"I have the skillset and the abilities behind me, and I 100% will be a world champion in the next few years, way before Fabio Wardley. 

"I want to get out [and fight again] as soon as possible. I want to get as many fights under my belt as I can. I want to get my name out there and really make a statement."
