<p>Nigel Benn has identified three domestic opponents for his son, Conor, when the unbeaten welterweight makes his return to the ring.  </p>

<p>Benn is currently inactive following his postponed bout with Chris Eubank Jr last October when there was an adverse finding in his pre-fight drug test.  </p>

<p>Linked to numerous bouts in 2023, the next move of Benn is still unknown, but that hasn’t prevented the popular star continuously being in the spotlight when it comes to big fights. </p>

<p>With Manny Pacquiao and Keith Thurman also potential foes, Benn’s father, a former world champion, has selected three British names he would like to see in the ring with Conor. </p>

<p>John Ryder explained why he believes he deserves his fight with Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.</p>

<p>Ryder is the unfancied fighter of the two and travels to Mexico as the WBO mandatory at super middleweight.</p>

<p>He provides a chance for Canelo to demonstrate his fitness after hand surgery and - the Mexican will hope - the chance to show that he is back to his best after 2022’s defeat to Dmitry Bivol and his routine win over Gennadiy Golovkin.</p>

<p>Ryder believes that he will earn the respect of Canelo’s countrymen once the fight is done.</p>

<p>"I might walk to the ring to boos but I'm sure once the fight is over, I'll leave to cheers," Ryder said to <a href="https://www.skysports.com/boxing/news/12183/12873820/john-ryder-looking-to-beat-canelo-alvarez-in-guadalajara-for-one-of-british-boxings-best-away-wins" target="_blank">Sky Sports</a>.</p>

<p>"I'm going to put it all on the line and I'm sure they'll appreciate that."</p>

<p>Ryder explained how long he has been waiting for a chance, trying to force the opportunity during the Covid pandemic.</p>

<p>"It felt like I was following him around the world for a couple of years during Covid, boxing on cards in and around times he was due to fight just in case anyone got taken ill," he said.</p>

<p>"I've took my knocks and I'm there now. I'm fully deserving of this shot, I'm not getting it by opportunity or by default, I have built my way back up and earned my position.</p>

<p>"Now I feel I really have the opportunity and we're here for a reason."</p>

<p>He continued: "There's been a few dark days but we always knew the sun would shine the next day and kept the faith, kept working hard and we've earned our shot now and we're where we always truly believed we'd get to, so I'm thankful to myself, believing in myself and obviously the team around me for believing in me and sticking with me and just really having that bit in us to go for it.</p>

<p>Tyson Fury is in talks to take on WBO interim champion Zhilei Zhang in his next title defence.</p>

<p>Fury had been expected to fight Oleksandr Usyk as the two heavyweight champions both appeared keen to become undisputed.</p>

<p>However negotiations collapsed, with neither side accepting the blame, and Osyk looks set to go through his own mandatory challengers.</p>

<p>That might eventually have come up against WBO interim champion Zhang, but he is likely to have to wait for the IBF and WBA to give their men their chance first.</p>

<p>The WBA have ordered Usyk to come up against their mandatory, Daniel Dubois, who had lost to Joe Joyce in his only defeat.</p>

<p>As a result, Joyce had been mentioned as a match-up for WBC champion Fury, but the Briton lost his interim belt to Zhang last month in a surprise upset.</p>

<p>Now talks have begun between Zhang and Fury's camp, <a href="https://www.skysports.com/boxing/news/12040/12874471/tyson-fury-starts-talks-over-a-wbc-heavyweight-title-fight-against-zhilei-zhang" target="_blank">according to Sky Sports</a>.</p>

<p>A WBC mandatory has yet to be ordered for Fury after he took on and defeated Dillian Whyte last summer, and he followed that up with a routine victory against Derek Chisory in December, winning comfortably.</p>

<p>Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez looked back on his path to becoming undisputed at super middleweight and was particularly proud of beating WBO champion Billy Joe Saunders.</p>

<p>Saunders was a spiky character in some of the pre-match press obligations and weigh-in, and while Canelo traditionally gives respect to any opponent assuming they do the same, the Briton tried another tack.</p>

<p>Unfortunately for Saunders, it made little difference to the outcome of the fight as Canelo unleashed a brutal shot to his right eye socket, leaving a noticeable dent in his face that saw the fight stopped in the Mexican’s favour.</p>

<p>Saunders has yet to return to the ring, which may reflect the severity of the punishment Canelo dealt out to his opponent.</p>

<p>He looked back at his three fights for the four major belts, against Callum Smith (for the WBA and WBC belts), Saunders (WBO), and then Caleb Plant (IBF). </p>

<p>In particularly he was happy with the win over Saunders, telling DAZN about the belt: “This, I won in the fight with Billy Joe Saunders. </p>

<p>“One of my favourite fights because a lot of people were there - 74,000 - and he was talking a lot of s****.</p>

<p>“It was a very special fight for me, a very special win, because everything around that was just the way I won the fight, it was amazing.”</p>

<p>Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez revealed that his hand injury had kept him from fighting at the top of his game against Dmitry Bivol and many more fighters.</p>

<p>Bivol was Alvarez’s highest profile fight since he completed his collection of belts at 168lbs as he became the undefeated super middleweight champion.</p>

<p>While many had backed the Mexican to emerge victorious yet again, Bivol showed to the world that he was a brilliant fighter in his own right, and staked a claim to be one of the finest pound-for-pound competitors in boxing today.</p>

<p>Speaking to <a href="https://www.dazn.com/home" target="_blank">DAZN</a> ahead of his return fight following injury, against John Ryder, he was asked how surgery had gone, and what the impact had been on fighting with an injury.</p>

<p>He explained: “It’s good, it’s really good, I'm motivated because now I’m able to train 100% and that makes me feel confident and motivates myself.</p>

<p>“Like two years, three years but as a fighter, like, ‘One more fight, one more fight!’ but it is what it is. I’m happy to be able to train 100%.</p>

<p>“I think it affected everything because it’s boxing and I need my hands, but I have the skills to handle with one hand but at the end of the day, at the end of this past year I barely was able to train 100%. That made me not go 100% in the fight.</p>

<p>“Yes, I’m at my best, I`m the best fighter out there. I lost to one of the best fingers at 175 and I am trying to make history, to do everything different to other fighters, to go up and down weight classes, but it’s not easy.</p>

<p>“I like challenges and I feel my best.</p>

<p>“I feel I’m at my best, I feel good and in my prime, and you’re going to see.”</p>

<p>Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has revealed his ambitions for another fight after he meets John Ryder on Saturday night in Mexico.</p>

<p>The undisputed super middleweight fights in his home country against the veteran Briton, and he is widely regarded as the overwhelming favourite against his WBO mandatory challenger.</p>

<p>Canelo is coming off the back of hand surgery that has seen him step away from the ring for six months, an extended period for a boxer who had previously been busy collecting straps at 168lbs, before moving up to light heavyweight for a tilt at WBA champ Dmitry Bivol, and then moving down against for his trilogy rematch with Gennadiy Golovkin.</p>

<p>Speaking to DAZN ahead of his fight, Canelo acknowledged that he had plans to continue in the sport, and named his ideal next opponent, assuming he defeats Ryder.</p>

<p>“If John Ryder beats me, I’m done, but it’s not my last fight, I’ve got a long time in boxing,” he told Chris Mannix.</p>

<p>“Right now my short-term goal is a fight with Dmitry Bivol and then we’ll see.</p>

<p>“I just train for the best fighter out there. I don’t want to be so confident. They say the same for Dmitry Bivol and look. I train for the best fighter and lose to John Ryder, and I’m done.”</p>

<p>World flyweight champion Sunny Edwards thinks that victory is possible for John Ryder when he meets Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez tonight.</p>

<p>The fight will be shown live on <a href="https://www.dazn.com/home" target="_blank">DAZN and DAZN PPV</a> on Saturday in Mexico, in a homecoming fight for the undisputed super middleweight.</p>

<p>Despite a loss to Dmitry Bivol and surgery last year, Canelo is the overwhelming favourite against his WBO mandatory challenger.</p>

<p>Nonetheless, Edwards sees a way through for his fellow Briton.</p>

<p>“I feel like… Where’s Canelo at right now?” said IBF champion Edwards, reported BoxingScene.com.</p>

<p>“He’s obviously a very, very good fighter but where’s he at this second? Ryder has put in a few good performances, obviously against the likes of Callum Smith.</p>

<p>“There are a few worries, a few losses on there for me, the Billy Joe Saunders loss, a knockout loss to Nick Blackwell. They are not the kind of things you want to see on a record before getting in the ring with Canelo, albeit a long time ago.</p>

<p>“But I think he’s one of the more resilient, tougher fighters at the weight and if anyone’s really going to kind of grind it out, it might be him. He’s built for it.</p>

<p>“I’ve never really seen him hurt too much, I’ve seen him take shots and put in performances at a good level, so is it possible that he could pull it out? Maybe he’s tough enough.</p>

<p>“He’s just built that way where it’s like: ‘Hold on, Canelo doesn’t really dent me as much as [people might have thought]’. And maybe, like a Bivol, it kind of unravels Canelo a little bit, he doesn’t make a dent and then gets picked off a bit and the fight’s closer than he’d want it and then he’s losing it.</p>

<p>“It is a massive ask in Mexico for John Ryder. Do I think Canelo is favoured? 100 per cent. But you’ve got to root for the British man. I would love John to do it.”</p>

Canelo was beaten by Bivol last year and he’s made it clear that he wants to revisit the bout at some point. There’s speculation that fight could be next and if Canelo is already planning that contest, he needs to make sure he gets past Ryder and not take him lightly. </p>

<p><strong>Make his experience count  </strong></p>

<p>Ryder is no stranger when it comes to fighting on enemy territory. In 2019, Ryder visited Liverpool to take on Callum Smith, but facing Canelo is a totally different proposition. The Mexican star has been at the top of boxing for well over a decade and he handles the big occasion as well as anyone. This event will be nothing new to him but perhaps it could overwhelm Ryder. Canelo should be looking to exploit that by showing Ryder the level he operates at. </p>

<p><strong>Target the body  </strong></p>

<p>Ryder’s defence will surely be tight from the outset as he looks to work his way into the fight and take Canelo into the later rounds. Canelo is an expert body puncher, and he should look to hurt Ryder’s mid-section so he can slow him down later in the fight. If Ryder feels Canelo’s power early to the body, then the fight’s second half could be unpleasant for the challenger. </p>

<h2>John Ryder </h2>

<p><strong>Fight the fight, not the occasion </strong>  </p>

<p>This fight is a huge deal in Mexico due to Canelo’s popularity and the crowd will be excited long before the first bell sounds. Ryder has been in the ring with many top-level operators and has often given a good account of himself regardless of setting. He must do the same here and just treat this like another fight despite who’s standing in the opposite corner. </p>

<p><strong>Don’t take any early risks </strong>  </p>

<p>Ryder is an in-your-face fighter who likes to set a fast pace behind a high guard. That approach has worked against numerous high-level fighters, but will it be enough against Canelo? Probably not. If Ryder is there to be hit, then Canelo will find the target and the fight won’t last long if Canelo lands frequently. Ryder should take a look in the first few rounds and do his best to stay in the fight whilst frustrating Canelo who could be eager to put a show on. </p>

<p><strong>Jab, Jab, Jab </strong>  </p>

<p>Although Canelo has few weaknesses, his two losses, to Floyd Mayweather and Bivol, came against fighters who punched first with their lead hand. Sergey Kovalev also had success with the jab against Canelo before he was stopped late so it’s definitely one approach to take. If Ryder can time his jab well and score success early with it, it could give him a platform to push on and take his fair share of rounds. </p>

<p>Joe Fournier is backing John Ryder to cause a monumental shock this weekend by defeating Canelo Alvarez and becoming the undisputed ruler at super-middleweight.  </p>

<p>Fournier returns to the ring on May 13 when he faces KSI live on DAZN in multiple regions, and the confident fighter believes Ryder can register a win one week before taking care of his own business with the popular YouTuber. </p>

<p>Ryder’s path to Canelo has been a mixed one but the Islington man enters the fight in great form after securing two high quality wins over Daniel Jacobs and Zach Parker in 2022.  </p>

<p>Despite being a huge underdog, Ryder is used to such a position, and Fournier, a huge fan of the Tony Sims trained fighter, insists Ryder can get the job done.  </p>

<p>“If you’re asking me who I think will win, I would love a John Ryder win,” said Fournier when speaking exclusively with <a href="https://www.dazn.com/home">DAZN</a>. </p>

<p>John Ryder could produce one of boxing's great upsets when he takes on Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez for the undisputed super middleweight title on Saturday night. </p>

<p>The fight, which can be seen live on <a href="https://www.dazn.com/home">DAZN and DAZN PPV</a>, is an opportunity Ryder has fought tooth and nail for during a career full of highs and lows, but with the fight taking place in Mexico against someone who has a flawless record when it comes to British challengers, many believe 'The Gorilla' will struggle to emerge victorious in Guadalajara. </p>

<p>However, DAZN Boxing analyst Sergio Mora explained how Ryder can cause problems for Alvarez on <a href="https://www.dazn.com/en-GB/show/Competition:cdkm65em8l4jxhtpyo6yov858/ArticleId:1u8txhhdztl221osf76w1wewhe">JABS</a>. </p>

<p>"John Ryder is a legitimate super middleweight, he hasn’t been fluctuating," Mora said.</p>

<p>"The stature, the strength and then comes the style. He’s really good at fighting small.</p>

<p>"He’s a southpaw, he doesn’t do much with the footwork but he’s good with his upper body movement.</p>

<p>"He throws great body shots that make you keep your elbows tucked in, so you have to have explosive combinations which Canelo has.</p>

<p>"There’s going to be some tricky moments for Canelo, I don’t think it’s going to be six rounds or under.</p>

<p>"I think Canelo still gets the knockout maybe, but you’re going to see some difficulty in the first six to eight rounds because John Ryder is that good and I don’t think he gets blasted out of there."</p>
